Joy

Updated: Jul 22, 2020

An unconventional piece // Back in high school, my creative writing teacher asked us to personify emotion. I chose Joy...

Think of this as her life in a montage of sorts:

Born as a twin,

Joy came out of the womb after sorrow.

The earliest riser.

She wakes up to the first light of sun;

singing as she joins the day.

Joy sees the world in color.

As one indescribable,

beautifully-messy

masterpiece.

Her smile does not go unnoticed.

Even when her smile is not shown,

her presence shakes the room.

On Sunday mornings Joy buys her groceries

at the Farmer's Market on 8th avenue.

Evenings give Joy the delight of

watering her garden

and sipping on hot tea

into the late hours of the night.

Joy drives a Jeep,

and travels to new places.

She has no need for a camera,

for her mind absorbs everything.

An endless gallery of captured memories.

A mental scrapbook of present moments.

She dances

with barefooted passion.

Twirling and leaping

without shame.

Arms opening in blossom.

Releasing all worry and guilt.

A wild outpour from her sleeping heart.

The unshakable one.

Joy is neighbors with Pleasure.

She likes to show her the little things in life.

They ride bikes together at Mercy park across the street

and pluck the hillside wildflowers.

Joy has many friends.

They claim she is sensual.

"Too much" of a romantic.

But of course,

she is Joy from knowing Love.

Wherever there is Freedom,

there is Joy. The two tied the knot

and gave birth to Strength and Endurance.

Joy knows the secret sauce to life.

Some, like Pain, are still trying to solve it.

The best part about Joy is, she is always around.
